ANC Commissioner
_______
Bruce Levine
Bruce Levine and his wife Sharron moved to Southwest in 2013 after many years residing in Montgomery County, MD, which followed many years in NYC. Bruce jumped into the civic life of the Southwest community virtually upon arrival—he became a member of the Board of the Southwest Neighborhood Assembly and he soon became President of the organization. At the same approximate time, he became a member of the Board of the Tiber Island Condominium. Most recently, he has been a founding Board member and Treasurer of the Southwest Community Foundation, a 501c3 organization which serves as a complement to the many vibrant civic organizations and initiatives in Southwest. Through these involvements, Bruce has come to appreciate the special qualities of our neighborhood, as well as the challenges we face. He is honored to have the opportunity to represent 6D06 in working to enhance the quality of life in Southwest for all residents.
Bruce is an attorney—a former litigator—and has significant experience in several fields: management and strategy consulting; economic and workforce development; and education. He has worked for major law firms and international consulting firms, and has also been in the executive suite of two start-up companies. Currently, he is a professor of education policy and law in Drexel University’s School of Education, where he directs the Education Policy program and directs the masters’ program in Education Improvement and Transformation. His scholarship has revolved around the study of K-12 community school/integrated student support models; the relationship between K-12 schools and their communities; civic education and literacy; and developments in US law affecting the education system.
To his new role as ANC Commissioner, Bruce brings a commitment to the reasonable balancing of often competing interests; to being a good listener; to engaging in fact-based decision-making; and to communicating effectively. He believes strongly in systems thinking and in the value of partnerships; in Southwest, we are lucky to have a great pool of willing and able collaborators, ranging from the SWBID to smaller not-for-profits. He also sees a need for DC government, especially the Executive Branch, to be more responsive to the needs and desires of Southwest residents and businesses
